Abstract
The critical review of nursing literature implies that the self -concept of nurses acts as an important motivating factors for quality nursing care. With a view to exploring how Korean clinical nurses see themselves, the Korean version of Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument (PSCNI) using 30 likert scale items was validated and measured which was developed by Arthur in 1990.

This study is an extension of the PSCNI using Korean smaples with some modifications. A convenient sample was drawn from 1230 clnical nurses working in ten regional administrative districts of Korea, literally covering all regions. One thousand and two hundred survey questionnaires were analyzed through the statistical analysis system(SAS).

The major findings include the following:

(1) The reliability of PSCNI, using item analysis statistical program was high(Cronbach¡¯s Alpha:. 933211).

(2) The validity of PSCNI, using principal component analysis statistical program was also highly established with clear four factors of PSCNI. These factors were the dimensions of competence, satisfaction, confidence, and empathy which demonstrate the attributes of caring, the key concept of nursing.

(3) The mean score of PSCNI of Korean clinical nurses were 3.02 which indicates that their professional self -concepts are not clearly established yet.

(4) Items of high score of PSCNI were three: "I can not empathize easily with others", "It¡¯s important for the nurse to understand the patient¡¯s feeling and empathize with them", "I don¡¯t want to be emothionally close with my nursing colleagues". These items are belong to the component of communication dimension of PSCNI.

(5) The lowest score of PSCNI was "The reality of nursing service was not much different to what I had expected" (2.08). This suggests that more active public relations and pre-educational opportunities of what nursing is, should be offered to publics.
